The Birth of Cotton Candy:
Originally called “Fairy Floss,” machine-spun cotton candy was first invented by the most unlikely of creators: a dentist. Dr. William Morrison and his candy-making partner, John C. Wharton, developed the treat in 1897. They first introduced it to the public at the 1904 World’s Fair in Missouri where it was very well-received. It was not until 1921 that it was called “Cotton Candy,” when another dentist, Joseph Lascaux, invented a similar sugar-spinning machine.
